We chose our cattle breed very carefully. British White cows are very well suited to our climate, of course. Growing thick coats in the winter, in the summer they thrive out in the fields on grass and herbs and wildflowers growing in our meadows. They do well on the grass diet through the winter too. They calve easily and are good mums. Not only that, but they are truly beautiful animals with white coats and black ears, noses and sox!
We were looking for a breed that would do well on a pure grass diet. We don't feed them anything else, no processed feeds, no "extra this'es", or "added that's", just grass. That's what they've evolved to eat.
Whilst that does mean that we haven't "maximised our profits", it does mean that you can put meat on your plate that is much closer to the way nature intended. Meat that hasn't been "speeded up", with all the attendant problems that can bring, both on the farm and in your metabolism.
British White cows are registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. They are a traditional, native breed which fell out of popularity when the bigger, continental breeds were introduced.
The beef is hung for 21-28 days and is tender with good flavour. Meat as it used to be!We are committed to raising animals as naturally as possible, what better to do that with than a native breed?
