Gloucester Old Spots Pork
We buy piglets from a friend when they are weaned from their mothers. This means that we don't have to keep our own boar and breeding sows, which would be a step too far in our small setup. They are kept very considerately until they are ready to come here, and considerately after they get here too!
The piglets are weaned between 8 and 10 weeks. They are not routinely vaccinated and they do not have their tails docked or their teeth clipped.
In summer the pigs live in the paddock with the turkeys, rooting around and enjoying a diet of wheat, beans, and fresh vegetables.
In winter when the paddock is like a mud bath we provide an open barn for their shelter with plenty of straw and compost for them to root around in.
The result is happy pigs who produce a flavoursome meat with a good layer of sweet fat around it.
