Our Produce
When we started farming we made a decision to raise our animals the way we'd like them raised if we were going to eat them (which we do). We know them (almost) all by name, we build relationships and get attached to them... all the things they say you shouldn't do, but we can't help it.
We have little or no interest in "going organic" and are more interested in keeping chemicals out of the equation, giving the animals as natural a lifestyle as possible, replanting wildflower meadows and woodland windbreaks and generally ensuring life is happy and red-tape free.
We have been "head hunted" by Rick Stein and are included in the second edition of his "Local Food Heroes" directory as "Food Super Heroes" (see page 219, if you've already got the guide).
You
cannot apply to be part of it, you are invited. One of his researcher's mother met Lorraine at a Wiltshire Farmers' Market. Apparently she chatted, took a leaflet and bought some meat, as many people do. After the event, we had a phone call from the researcher asking us questions about the farm and what we are doing here. She was very impressed with our work - especially that we care for the animal from birth, right through to sale, doing much of the butchery as well - her mother had raved about the taste of the meat, so they wanted to include us.
But don't take their, or our, word for it! You are more than welcome to come and see what we're up to and if you like what we do, you can buy from the farm, from the local farmers markets or we'll sort out a free local delivery or mail order for you.
Prices may vary but are a rough reflection of supermarket prices. We hope you'll agree the quality is rather higher.
Rare Breed Beef - British White Cows
These guys started it all off. Beautiful white cows with black ears, noses and sox. We bought them initially because, as well as being native and rare, they are easy to look after. No horns, easy calving, good mums, good meat. Magic. Well, that's how it seems to us.
Gloucester Old Spots pork, sausages & bacon from our own Gloucester Old Spots pigs
Pigs are amazing animals. They express a deep satisfaction for life and all that it presents. They love chasing the turkeys, get most indignant if "caught" by the electric fence and if you sit with them they will come and greet you, check out the edibility of your boots and you will hear a contented grunt as they root around. We feed them on organic grain & vegetables, they get very big very quickly and produce sausages and bacon worth getting out of bed for!
Chicken
We kept getting asked if we could supply chicken, but we didn't want to offer just any-old-chicken, we were looking for something that would keep up the high standards of the rest of our produce, and you'll be pleased to hear that we've found it. Ixworth chickens produce the most exquisite meat. You'll not be surprised to hear that they are also on the rare breeds list, perhaps the rarest of the animals we stock, and after a while we found out why! They don't breed
very extensively, and they (at least so far for us) produce a high proportion of chickens not cockerels. However, despite the difficulties of breeding these birds we are starting to form a flock and now have some availability.
Eggs
We have a "farmyard flock" of, well by now a mixture of breeds; auricana, marans, great crested grebes, laying eggs of different colours. A novel gift or something different for the breakfast table. They'll be grey/blue, chocolate brown, speckled and white (we think!)
Seasonal stuff
Norfolk Black Turkey
These hardy birds are raised in the fields at Vowley Farm. Clearing up after the pigs and cows. Enjoying the freedom of flight (well, sort of!) as they flap across the paddock. They are protected from marauding foxes by electric netting and are pretty safe, as long as they're not carried by a gust of wind, their steering in flight is very dubious. They chatter and laugh their way through the 6 months they spend here. If you haven't met turkeys before, please do come and join in with their joyful existence.
